Where it all began

1809

Harbourside warehouses as part of the industrial revolution in Bristol

Originally a marshland sitting below Bristol Cathedral, this plot of land was filled and transformed into Harbourside warehouses as part of the industrial revolution in Bristol.

1920s – Initially depot buildings, these were then transformed into tall tobacco warehouses

The area became one of the busiest parts of Bristol docks in the early 20th century. These prominent warehouses became the backdrop to some of the city’s most prestigious moments, from hot air balloon displays to power-boat racing on the Harbourside.

Decline set in as shipping moved to Avonmouth Docks and the area was primarily used as a public car park. At this point, industrial activity in Canons Marsh had largely ended.

On 29th May 1988, around 7am, the Canons Marsh tobacco warehouses were demolished via a massive controlled explosion.

The demolition was considered a major redevelopment step after the City Docks declined, and at the time was the largest controlled explosion in Europe since World War II.
